The Perception of a DifferenceWes Zimmerman . Wes ZimmermanAbout the Author: Wesley W. ZimmermanI stood on a hill at midnight under a black sky vivid with stars and a quarter moon. I was 18. I was alone talking out loud with God. I did this several times a week when I came home from my job in a theatre. Suddenly, I wasn't alone. My perception was that God, this Presence, was real, very real. I sensed that He/It was asking me to serve Him by serving others. I felt intense love, warmth, peace... I said, I will serve you in whatever way you ask. My life changed; silently, permanently. Five years later... "Who's the tall girl in the long red coat?" "I don't know, I've never seen her before." "Looks like she and her guy are reading a book together." I wanted to meet her. I did something completely uncharacteristic for me. I walked up behind this couple, stuck my head between their heads, shouldered the man aside, and introduced myself to the lady. Six weeks later she accepted my proposal of marriage. Eight years later...I applied for a job as a system support person with a large business equipment company. After taking a battery of tests, I was taken to meet the district manager. He came to the doorway of his office. He asked me two questions. I asked him three. We shook hands and I walked out. He and I talked about that meeting many times in the ensuing years. We agreed that our time face-to-face was less than five minutes; yet, when it ended, I knew I would respect and enjoy working with him and he felt the same way about me. Three weeks later when he called and asked me to join his team as a salesperson, I said yes-- even though I'd tried sales once before and did not like it.
During my sales and marketing career I worked with customers and salespeople all over the world, helping them to succeed in making their dreams come true while working with them as their peer, manager, leader, consultant, and mentor. I have been successful in manufacturing and sales management, professional sales, marketing, and business ownership. I also became a certified Lay Pulpit Supply for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America; and in that capacity, I filled in for sick pastors on many occasions. At age 51 I became a business consultant. I used my experience and insight to help client companies and their employees to reach their goals. It was then that I realized I had been using the Perception of a Difference most of my life and that sharing its power had enabled me to help hundreds of others to reach their personal goals. Learning about and using the Perception of a Difference brought the people in 95 companies personal satisfaction and happiness and enabled them to move their companies to success and stability. I've been writing all my life and developed a style that communicates with the reader. The CEO of a large corporation said, "Wes, you write the way you talk." It has served me well in helping others. Zimmerman's Zingers© was originally aimed at salespeople in Honeywell Information Systems. They were fun to read and filled with useful ideas; management at all levels asked for them. Zimmerman's Zingers© reached every level of the company worldwide. The Zingers continued as a subscription publication for my consulting clients and was joined by The Perception of a Difference Quarterly (PDQ).© Both were published for several years. I have also written many articles for various trade publications. I have learned a great deal from starting and operating two service businesses and working with the people in client businesses ranging in size from three to 175,000 team members.
